Micah 6:7-8
7.Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams,
with ten thousands of rivers of oil?
Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression,
the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?”
8 8. He has told you, O man, what is good;
and what does the Lord require of you
but to do justice, and to love kindness,
and to walk humbly with your God?
Do justice. Love kindness. Walk humbly with God. *Sigh* It's amazing how easily we Christians get off track, isn't it? We spend that one very "special" day of the week going over what "doctrine" we as Christians need for our "sanctification." We reverently chew on that bread and carefully drink from that cup, and whether you want to admit it or not, many times the Lord's Supper is not a reminder of Christ's sacrifice for us, but rather a reminder that we will do better this coming week.
Perhaps you actually do "do better" that week and you read your bible, you read that devotion your pastor gave you three years ago, and you commit yourself (again) to that small group. You might even get yourself on your knees and pray.
You pray for forgiveness for being so unfaithful and weak to the world. You pray for those around you, for healing, wisdom, or strength as they go through this-or-that "struggle." You use all the theologically correct words, throw a few doctrinal statements in there, maybe even spice it up a bit by using a "prayer guide."
We know our doctrine. We know our theology. We know the "Romans Road" to salvation. We've read the 5,000 books on becoming a better Christian. But ask yourself this.
Why?
Does God really care if you know your 5-step prayer by heart? Does God really care how well you can debate theology against another Christian denomination? Does God really care if you are a "hymns only" or "KJV only" Christian?
I have been a Christian for 12 of my 19 years of life. I have been in more poisonous churches than I care to count. I have known many people who get tangled up on trivial christian matters and next thing you know, they are willing to die on that insignificant hill. The problem with that pesky insignificant hill, it would seem, is that Christians love those insignificant matters. Matters such as these:
Hair coverings, drums or no drums in church, skirts only for women, KJV only, Hymns only, Courting instead of dating.
You see, all of those matters? They are exactly what does not matter. You want to know what God wants for you?
Do Justly
Love mercy
Walk humbly with your God.
God doesn't care what denomination we go to. God doesn't care how holy we think we are. God doesn't care about big long words we use to sound spiritual. He does. Not. Care.
Going back to Micah, lets finish this off with re wording those verses.
Will the Lord be pleased with your head covering?
With the bible translation you use?
Does the Lord care as much about courting as you do?
Will he be pleased over your style of music,
or how long your skirt is?
He has told you, O man, what is good;
and what does the Lord require of you
but to do justice,
and to love kindness,
and to walk humbly with your God?
